In an interview with BMC Biology, Thomas Couvreur, the principal investigator of the RAINBIO consortium, talks of the important role RAINBIO played in improving the understanding of the current state and conservation of African tropical plant biodiversity. The RAINBIO team assembled and quality-checked a vast amount of otherwise scattered data, now absolutely fundamental to understanding how tropical vegetation will respond to climate change across Africa. The recent fire in Brazil’s National Museum is a stark reminder of the importance of collating and conserving as much physical data as possible in digital format.
